I gravitated toward painting wildlife portraits when I became aware of the horrific abuses that wildlife is suffering worldwide. Although these issues were heart wrenching to learn about, it motivated me to action.

Because I think animals are sentient beings, I felt the best way to create awareness about their plight was through painting their portraits. I do believe the adage "the eyes are the window to the soul." Thus, I was hoping one could gaze into the animal’s eyes and sense their intelligence, their self-awareness.

I think if human beings realized that animals experience a spectrum of emotions, their capacity for kindness and empathy towards other species would increase.

“One of the most wonderful things in nature is a glance of the eye; it transcends speech; it is the bodily symbol of identity.”

- Ralph Waldo Emerson.
