I love learning, whether it is from education or by experience. Learning increases my knowledge, and knowledge allows me to make better decisions. I believe informed decisions contribute to the betterment of society, for humans and non-humans alike.
I also think that information increases empathy for other people and other species. I recently took a 10-week course on compassionate communication. Although I am aware of biases, I never realized how subconscious biases are and how many different types of biases exist. Through the course, I learned of two websites which focus on creating awareness of biases. I highly recommend checking them out. One is Our Kind of People, the other is the Implicit Association Test, by Harvard University, which can be taken for free.
As far as a formal education is concerned, I earned a Master of Science in Accounting, and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, with an emphasis in Earth Science. In addition, I have taken many classes outside of academia to help myself become a more well-rounded person. Those courses include art, spirituality, alternative health modalities, knitting, and wildlife rehabilitation. To this day, I am taking courses and learning something new.
